On 8 Mar. my daughter has taken an entrance examination. I believe she will be passed.
Now, I should prepare something for her. I should be ready to pay 25000 yen at entering the high school, 20000 yen for gym suits and ground shoes and indoor shoes,
30000 yen for school uniform, 6000 yen for text books, according to the handout from the high school. Also she needs a knapsack, shoes, cell phone, and bicycle for commute. I'm going to find a folding bicycle at some recycle shops.
After she entered the high school she must decide what she wants to do after left high school. She hopes to go to college. Is the choice right?
Recently I've noticed an interesting topic in the NY Time's Room for Debate series. I've just read the introduction.
"Does college make you smarter?"
A book, titled "Academically Adrift : Limited Leaning on College Campus" sounds like controversial.
The study by two sociologists, Richard Arum of New York University and Josipa Roksa of the University of Verginia have found that undergraduates lean very little.
According to their analysis of more than 2300 undergraduates, forty-five percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills --including critical thinking, complex reasoning,and writing --during their first two years of college.
Is there any study in japan like this? I want to know.
3月8日 娘が入学試験を受けました。受かっていると信じます。
いろいろと準備をしなくてはなりません。学校からのプリントによれば、入学時に25000円、体操服や体育のシューズに20000円 制服に30000円 教科書に6000円用意しなければいけません。それに娘は通学するのにかばん、靴、携帯電話、自転車も要るといいます。リサイクルショップで折畳み自転車を探してみようと思います。
高校に入ったら、卒業後に何をするか決めないといけません。娘は進学を希望しています。はたして正しい選択なのでしょうか？
最近ニューヨークタイムズのディベートのシリーズでおもしろい話題に気がつきました。前書きを読んだだけですが。「大学でより賢くなるか？」
『学力漂流 大学での制限された学び』という題名の本は論議を呼びそうです。
二人の社会学者、ニューヨーク大学のリチャード・アラム、ヴァージニア大学のジョシパ・ロクサ による調査で大学生がほとんど学んでいないことが明らかになりました。
2300人以上の大学生に対する分析によると、彼らの45パーセントは、大学生活の最初の2年間で、批判的思考力、複雑な推論、書き取りを含めたスキルの幅がはっきりした進歩を遂げていません。
日本でもこのような調査はあるのでしょうか？知りたいです。

My daughter has passed the entrance examination. I'm so glad. And I'm also glad to here no students in her junior high school has failed to prefecture high schools
entrance examination.
She wrote an e-mail to her elder brother who lived in Tokyo, but she couldn't send the e-mail. She supposed there was something wrong with the cell-phone carrier.
In the next morning I send him an e-mail by Gmail. He replied after two hours. He told that yesterday he had went to Akihabara to shopping and he couldn't go home because trains were halted. He would go home today.
I was relieved.
娘は入試に合格しました。 うれしいです。それに娘の中学校の生徒は誰も県立の入試に落ちなかったそうで、それもうれしいです。
娘は東京にいる兄にメールを書きましたが送れませんでした。携帯の会社に問題があるようでした。
翌朝、私がGメールでメールを出したところ2時間後に返事が来ました。昨日秋葉原に買い物に行っていて電車が止まって帰れなかったそうです。今日帰るとのことです。安心しました。

graduation ceremony
On 4 March, it was so cold in early morning, the road around my house was thinly covered with snow.
On the day there was a graduation ceremony at my daughter's junior high school.
The graduates went up the stage, were given the diploma from principal, then made speeches.
Most graduates said their gratefulness to teachers, parents, friends, and local people, their expectation for high school life. There were a few boys who hardly said with biting their inside of their cheeks. Though the words were common, we, audience realized that the students said their true feelings. They were adorable. I thought they were OK as they were.
I don't know any other junior high school has that program at the graduation ceremony, this school's ceremony deserves to attendance.
A graduation gift from the city board of education was a name stamp. I was glad. My daughter is going to need one, when she makes a bank account to pay for the high school expense.
A representative of the first and second year students made a farewell speech, then the students went up the stage and sang a song "Valuable thing".
A representative of the graduates made a response speech, then the graduates went up the stage and sang a song "Thank you".
After the emcee announced the ceremony was over, the graduates went on the stage again. It was a surprise, actually every year it was so we were not surprised.
Shared some students, they made a heartwarming speech, then sang "Hymn to the earth" and "Time traveler", which sounded well practiced. Meanwhile some students couldn't sing well because they were sobbing.
After the ceremony finished, the graduates and their parents went to home room. They received their diploma and some awards.
Their two letters which written by themselves before were returned to them. They got two letters, one for them and one for their guardians. Every students gifted their family the letter. I was given it from my daughter.
Our home room teacher showed us a DVD which digested this school year.
The students and parents said "good-bye" though we didn't want to say.

Happy graduation
Tomorrow my daughter will be graduated from a junior high school.
I'm glad, she is the youngest child of me. I've finished the obligation of my children's compulsory education. Also I'm glad she has grown up to be a person of firm character.
Next week she will take an entrance examination of high school. I'm hardly anxious about it. The number of applicant of the school she wants to go is lower than the fixed number. If she won't catch a cold or have anything unexpected trouble, she would do well.
Perhaps the examiners are nervous about forbiding the examinees to bring their cell phones. Recently the topic of social cheating by cell phone and "Q&A website" is popular. I think if a school authority wants to avoid such a social cheating, they must prepare some examination wears like the clothes you ware at a medical check.
It should be great bother to both examiner and examinee.
By the way I borrowed an interesting book. "J-literature" by Robert Cambell. Though I've never seen the TV program, this book is based the TV program.
Ｉ've heard it is on air in early morning.
You can read various Japanese literature, classic and modern, in Japanese and in English.
I recommend this book. Read this book, and you can enjoy the kind summary and explanation.
I decided to watch the TV program as early as I can.
明日 娘が中学を卒業します。
とても嬉しいです。一番下の子なのでこれで私の子どもに必修教育を受けさせる義務は終わりです。それにしっかり者に育ったので嬉しいです。
来週 高校入試です。ぜんぜん心配していません。娘が行きたい高校は定員割れです。かぜをひくとか何か予期せぬことが起きないかぎりうまくやるでしょう。
おそらく関係者は携帯電話の持ち込みを用心しているでしょう。最近、携帯電話と質問ウエブサイトを使ったカンニングが話題です。もし、学校側がそうしたカンニングを避けたいなら、人間ドッグのときみたいな検査服が必要だと思います。検査する側もされる側も面倒ですが。
ところでおもしろい本を借りました。『Ｊブンガク』 ロバート・キャンベル編 です。私は見たことはありませんが、テレビ番組から生まれた本です。早朝やっているとか。
この本で、古典、現代のさまざまな日本文学読めます、日本語と英語で。
おすすめです。読むと親切な要約と解説がのっています。
なるべく早くそのテレビ番組を見ようと思います。

Entrance examination to the high school
On 18 Feb, my coworkers were talking about the number of applicants of the high school entrance examination,soon after the evening newspaper delivered.
It said the Rinko high school and Kusu agricultural high school were oversubscribed. Hitamikuma high school and Hita high school fell below the quota.
The next week the applicants can change their choices. I didn't hope my daughter know that the number of applicant of the school of her choice wasn't fixed.
But when I came home she had already known it. I hope she won't have less motivation to study for the entrance exam.
I recommended her a book, an experience note of studying abroad by Ms.TUTUMI Mika. The title is "First studying abroad".
She went to U.S. after she had graduated high school. In this book her college life in there is described vividly, how she spent time with her host family, house mates,classmates, how she debated her teacher who had not believed her essay was written by herself, how hard she studied at the college et al.
This book had published before but it has published again with a little changed.
I'm so glad to know she was such a cute girl,though I've known her just as an excellent journalist.
My daughter finished reading the book last night and this morning. She seemed enjoyed it,which pleased me.
2月18日金曜日、夕刊が届いてから、職場の人たちが高校の入学志願者数について話していました。 夕刊によれば林工と玖珠農は志望者が定員を上回り 日田三隈と日田高は定員割れでした。来週志願変更ができます。娘には定員割れだったことを知られたくありませんでした。
しかし、家に帰ったら娘はすでに知っていました。受験勉強のやる気をなくさないでほしいです。
私は娘に堤未果さんの描いた体験記の本を薦めました。タイトルは『はじめての留学』です。
著者は高校を卒業してアメリカに留学しました。この本には彼女の留学生活が活き活きと描かれています。ホストファミリーやハウスメイトと過ごしたこと、学校の友だちを過ごしたこと、先生が彼女のエッセイを彼女が書いたと信じてくれなくて討論したこと、どんなにいっしょうけんめい勉強したか、などなど。
この本は以前出版されたものですが、少し変えて再出版されたものです。
堤さんはすぐれたジャーナリストとしてしか知りませんでしたが、こんなに魅力的な少女だったことを知ってうれしくなりました。
娘は昨晩と今朝までで読んでしまいました。楽しんだようで私もうれしいです。

news about the Egyptian movement
Last Saturday, I took my daughter to see the doctor to get a vaccine reduce the risk of uterine cancer. In her age it is still free. She said it was awfully painful.
Last Sunday, I had anything that I had to do. So I spent time reading newssite and watching Youtube about Egypt on 6 Feb.
I had learn about a young man who killed last year. His name is Khalid Saeed. He was brutally beat,tortured and killed by security police after posting a video clip of policeman involved in drug deals. His death inspired to Egyptian people the anger. I saw the shocking portrait. His photo was circulated through social network service,facebook and Youtube,
They did silent protests. To avoid being under arrested, they prayed quietly in their hands holding the Koran or the Bible, with no shouting nor marching. I saw a picture of many young people standing facing the sea, chest choked.

先週の日曜日はしなくてはいけない事はありませんでした。それでエジプトについてニュースサイトを見たりユーチューブを見たりしました。
昨年亡くなった若者のことを知りました。彼の名はカレド・サイードです。警察が麻薬取引に関わっていたという動画を投稿し、公安警察に虐殺されました。ショッキングな顔写真を見ました。彼の写真はソーシャルネットワークやフェイスブック、ユーチューブを通して広まりました。
彼らはサイレントデモをしました。逮捕されるのを避けるため、叫んだり行進したりせず、手に手にコーランや聖書を持ち静かに祈りました。多くの若者が海に向かってたたずむ写真を見ました。胸がしめつけられるようでした。

driving on snowy day
On 30 Jan. I went to Oita city. It had been snowing since previous night. The express way was closed. So I drove through Route 210. An electric bulletin board told "Mizuwake Pass, closed to normal tire". I took Mizuwake Pass by winter tire.
I attended an editing conference. Now we are on the process of rewriting working manual. Each district representative gather to discuss each parts divided to each district. On the day ten o'clock through eighteen we worked. On the way back home I drove Route 210 for the express way was still closed from Beppu to Hita. I could drive the road, but I was tired more than usually because many cars moved too slowly.
When I arrived at my home I was tired, but soon I became happy. Because the supper was Makizushi and Miso soup. My daughter prepared them. I'll remember this heartwarming supper.

According to the article many teenagers wear the cotton masks today and the numbers are increasing very rapidly. Though I can't see the fashion in Hita city.
For they are so tired from having to communicate with friends via SMS and emails,it is a relief to wear a masks. It is a way to hide their feelings. I haven't known such fashion trend. But I suppose it is a little bit annoying for the people who wear a pair of glasses.
1月30日大分市に行きました。前日の夜から雪でした。高速道路は閉鎖されていました。それで国道210号で行きました。電光標識が「水分峠ノーマルタイヤ通行困難」と告げていました。スタッドレスタイヤで行きました。
私は編集会議に出ました。私たちはいま仕事のマニュアルの改訂作業中です。各地区の代表が、各地区に割り当てられた部分を持ち寄り討議します。その日は10時から18時までやりました。帰宅するときまだ別府ー日田間は高速が通行止めだったので国道210号を帰りました。道路は通れましたがふだんよりクルマがのろのろ行くので疲れました。
家に着いたときは疲れていましたが、すぐ元気になりました。夕食が巻き寿司と味噌汁だったからです。娘が用意してくれました。この心温まる夕食は忘れられないでしょう。
おもしろい記事を見つけました。「マスクが日本の内気な10代に人気」といものです。
この記事によれば、今日多くの10代がマスクをし、その数は急速に増えているとのことです。日田ではその流行を見ていませんが。
彼らはＳＭＳやメールをとおして友だちとやりとりするのに疲れていて マスクをするとほっとするのだそうです。彼らの感情を隠す手段です。私はそんな流行を知りませんでした。しかし、眼鏡をかけている人にはうっとおしいだろうと思います。

According to the article many teenagers wear the cotton masks today and the numbers are increasing very rapidly. Though I can't see the fashion in Hita city.
For they are so tired from having to communicate with friends via SMS and emails,it is a relief to wear a masks. It is a way to hide their feelings. I haven't known such fashion trend. But I suppose it is a little bit annoying for the people who wear a pair of glasses.
1月30日大分市に行きました。前日の夜から雪でした。高速道路は閉鎖されていました。それで国道210号で行きました。電光標識が「水分峠ノーマルタイヤ通行困難」と告げていました。スタッドレスタイヤで行きました。
私は編集会議に出ました。私たちはいま仕事のマニュアルの改訂作業中です。各地区の代表が、各地区に割り当てられた部分を持ち寄り討議します。その日は10時から18時までやりました。帰宅するときまだ別府ー日田間は高速が通行止めだったので国道210号を帰りました。道路は通れましたがふだんよりクルマがのろのろ行くので疲れました。
家に着いたときは疲れていましたが、すぐ元気になりました。夕食が巻き寿司と味噌汁だったからです。娘が用意してくれました。この心温まる夕食は忘れられないでしょう。
おもしろい記事を見つけました。「マスクが日本の内気な10代に人気」といものです。
この記事によれば、今日多くの10代がマスクをし、その数は急速に増えているとのことです。日田ではその流行を見ていませんが。
彼らはＳＭＳやメールをとおして友だちとやりとりするのに疲れていて マスクをするとほっとするのだそうです。彼らの感情を隠す手段です。私はそんな流行を知りませんでした。しかし、眼鏡をかけている人にはうっとおしいだろうと思います。

entrance examination
On 18 Jan there was an entrance examination of private high school.
It was my daughter's first entrance examination in her life. The examinees of same junior high school gathered some places, and the high school bus took them. In the morning I took her to Hita municipal office Oyama branch where the Oyama junior high school students to be wait the bus.
Including my daughter most junior high school students take the private high school exam. They took it for in case of they would fail the public high school entrance exam, and to be used the atmosphere.
I asked her how she had done after she came home. She showed me the English quiz and answers she had written. I thought she had done well with a few little mistakes. And I knew another interesting trouble. In the first period the teacher said to the examinees "Start!", at the time five minutes earlier than the informed start time. So a girl student asked him "Oh, can I start?" He said "Sure". All students in the class commenced to dissolve the exam. After a little while the chime rang. The teacher looked like embarrassed.
I believe the junior high students can't be blamed. It was not their faults. But it was unfair, because the other classes' students had shorter time to resolve.
Of corse there might be an accident any time. This experience is useful for next time.
Many students except who will take recommendation exam have to keep on studying yet. The Oita prefectural high school entrance examination is 8 March.

娘には初めての入試でした。生徒たちは同じ中学ごとに何箇所かに集まりそれを高校のバスが連れていきました。私は朝、娘を大山中学生がバスを待つ大山振興局まで送っていきました。
娘を含みほとんどの中学生は私立高校の入試を受けます。すべりどめと雰囲気になれるために。
帰ってから娘にどうだったかききました。娘は英語の問題と自分の回答を見せてくれました。小さなまちがいが少しありましたがよくできているように思いました。それと別の問題について知りました。1時間目の試験で先生が受験生に正式の時間より5分早く「始めなさい」と言ったそうです。ひとりの女子生徒が「え、始めていいんですか？」とききました。先生は「いいです」と言ったそうです。生徒達はみな問題にとりかかりました。少ししてチャイムが鳴ったので先生は困っていたそうです。
私は中学生達は責められないと思います。彼らの落ち度ではありません。しかし、公平ではありません、他の教室の受験生はそれより試験時間が短かったわけですから。もちろん、アクシデントはいつでも起こりえます。この経験は次に役に立つでしょう。
推薦入試を受ける生徒以外はまだ勉強を続けなければなりません。大分県立高校の入試は3月8日です。
