I saw "The Case against 8"

On 28 June I went to Fukuoka city to see a movie.
I went to Nijiiro Mirai Cafe at Atago 1 chome in Fukuoka city. I left Hita at 11:30 am, on the way to there I accidentally got lost and waste one hour or more. I didn’t mean to go to Umi-machi.
That’t why I arrived at Atago at 3:30 pm. The screening had started already, I joined the audience halfway into the film. But after finished the owner kindly replayed for me from the beginning to catch up with.

The movie’s title is “The Case Against 8” and the Japanese title is “Gender Marriage”.
It’s a documentary film about the legal fight against the proposition 8 which proposed by residents in California, had forbidden same-sex marriage.
Honestly I’m not sure the law system of U.S. But it is overwhelmingly interesting.
In this movie two gay and lesbian couples have sued the state governor of California.
Before that the members of American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) had gotten mad and anxious for discrimination of gay and lesbian. One night a member met her acquaintance at a restaurant, the person told her Ted Olson might be interested in the lawsuit. She and other members couldn’t believe, but they thought if he might support them. Then Adam, one of the staff went to see him, to his amazement, Ted Olson said “Yes”.
He is conservative and believes the marriage is a conservative value.
Ted Olson and David Boies, the two attorneys, both great and old political foes at the presidential election of Bush v Gore, have made up a team. It caused controversy. The liberal person disliked Ted Olson. Adam was exhausted by the complaint from LGBT groups.
Still they carried on.They worked together so hard. The two gay and lesbian couples testified that they loved each other and wanted to marry as same as other people.  The attorneys questioned if same-sex marriage would be allowed who would be suffered.
It took four years before the two couples got married at the city center as the case of federal marriage equality.
On this legal fight process many citizens paid attention. This movie has filmed the people both for and against.
The people who are for think the right of marriage is one of civil rights. I saw a couple in the crowd around the court put up a sign which said “We used to be banned to marriage before”, the man liked like African American and the woman looked like Angro-Saxon. There is a history the inter-racial marriage was banned.
The people who claim that marriage should be allowed between a man and a woman believe their god says so. I feel awful that religion makes people thoughtless.
In Japan recently some municipal offices has started partnership proof.  Until same-same sex marriage will be allowed it may be a method like shelter in emergency.
The man who was one of the accuser said he didn’t want to get the partnership proof. If he get it, he may admit he was second citizen. It is discrimination.
I agree with his opinion, I hope Japanese law admit marriage equality soon.

I saw "The True Cost"

On 11 June I went to see a movie to Nakatsu city. The film meeting was held by the group “Earth Day Nakatsu”.
I saw “The True Cost”, which has revealed what going on behind the fashion industry.
In U.S. the clothes people ware used to be produced by domestic factories but now 95% of clothes are produced in developing countries.
The fast fashion companies seek the cheapest wage country to produce their clothes. That’s the reason why the garment factories are concentrated in Bangladesh. The garment workers are making clothes under cruel condition. Once the factory building had collapsed, hundreds of people were killed or injured. In Cambodia, some garment workers had established a labor union  and had got to the negotiating table with the owners, but they didn’t reach agreement, then, unbelievably, they locked the door and beaten the workers ―all female― with their fists, with the chairs, with the tables.

The problem is not only the fact that the garment workers’ human rights are neglected, but also the extreme consumption hurts environment.
So much waste of clothes are piled up and exhaust toxic gas. If you donate your clothes, it cause another problem, the majority of those clothes are exported to developing countries. One of the examples, in Haiti the charity clothes led the domestic fashion industry destroy. The employees of garment factory are not needed any more.
This movie also has researched agriculture. Nowadays agribusiness is based on GMO seeds and so much chemical fertilizer and pesticide. The people who deals with agriculture are ruined their health and their children’s health.

It looks like the people live in minority countries suck the benefit from majority countries. However it’s not true. Even if they look enjoying shopping, they are becoming poorer. Shopping is only compensation for their tough lives.

I’ve learned the very few capita;its and stock holders gain benefit while rest of people are suffering.
Still in fashion industry some designers have risen up to change the system, for example, “People Tree”, Stella McCartney.

The advertisement makes us feel every thing “to dispose” not “to use”. The more stuff you have, the more you are happy. Actually to have many stuff isn’t equal to happiness.
I’m scared brain washing. I’m obsessed by consumerism everyday.
In this movie Vandana Shiva and Richard Wolff are pointing out what makes the world in this way. I will read their books.

Severn Suzuki's lecture

On 14 Saturday I went to the lecture of Severn Suzuki, held at Gashall 24 in Fukuoka city.
I searched into the google map. I found the Gashall 24 was near Fukuoka prefectural office. It seemed hustle and bustle area.  I didn’t want to drive there.
Even if I can drive technically, I can’t understand at an intersection which district should I go, or which lane should I be. Last time or before last time I went to Fukuoka city, I parked my car on the road side and asked a few pedestrians which district I should go. I was exhausted.

This time I planned to drive to Yumetown Chikushino to parked my car, then I get on a bus for Hakata station and get off at Hasuike. My destination would be five minutes walk from the bus stop according to the google map.

To sit on a seat on a bus was much safer and more comfortable than to drive myself. The bus went through the urban expressway. There were some senior citizens who had IC transit card. I also used AreCore nimoca card. It was convenient.
While I was on the bus I saw a man in a wheelchair asked the driver to load his chair in the cargo room.   The driver got off the bus and loaded the chair, then the man got on the bus after the man the driver got on. It took time. I remembered bases in Vancouver. They had a board on the floor, which the driver turned it to outside like a bridge. It became a slope which make a wheelchair or a stroller easy to get on. It looked not so expensive device. Maybe it will be helpful in Japan.

I arrived at Gashall 24. There were many young mothers and babies and toddlers. It was lively atmosphere.

Severn who had made a legacy speech at Rio de Janeiro now studying at University of Victoria and mother of two children.
Severn Suzuki talked the Fort McMurray’s wildfire. She explained what’s unconventional tar sand. It used to be ignored ‘cause it cost much. But recently the conventional method oil has become decreased. That’s why the previous Canadian government had planned to develop the unconventional tar sand.  A hundred thousand people has evacuated as far with losing their homes.
She said we contributed the fire, typhoon, flood, etc. The biodiversity is decreasing. With the urbanization the cultural diversity is diminishing.
She talked about the Paris  climate change agreement, it was great success. Before Paris agreement, the limit of emissions to relatively safe levels was 2C, but scientist persuade that “2 degrees is too much”. Without action warming was predicted to reach a level that would reach unprecedented level and the glove rendered uninhabitable.
Scientist has warned, but big company has spread their opposition to the global warming. It up to us.
We should complete our energy system to sustainable one. In Canada, about tar sand there were no transparency same as in Japan about nuclear power plants. For energy policy it is needed accountability, diversity and responsibility.
Also it is needed the inter-generational justice. Only in Hungary, there is an ombudsman to cares about future generation.
There are two aspect we should do, to reduce the wastes as an individual, to change the system as a political issue.
The climate issue is a chance to make the policy being justice, transparent.

She has met many mothers against war, against nuclear power plants. It may be most exiting time in the history. We are powerful. We leap into a new paradigm.
Grandfather in politics, grandmother in politics.
Take role of influence. We all be inspired and all inspire.

In addition to Severn Suzuki, I met some groups which deal with sustainable power or Chernobyl medical support.
I’ve got many new perspective. I had a good time.

About the earthquakes

I should’ve written this before. But I had put off. I avoided because it was scary.

It was unbelievable.
The 14th April night’s earthquake was surprising. The next day I was forced to change the route to my work place because it was closed. Still I thought the earthquake was over then.
But another earthquake occurred in 16th Saturday midnight.
I was sleeping like a log. Then the house shook severely.
The vibration upset me. I ran downstairs and hide under a big dinner-table.
At that time I noticed the power outage and I left my spectacles upstairs.
After a while I put my glasses, turn on a flash light.
I wanted to see some information. As the power outage the WiFi router didn’t work. Thanks to the mobile router I’ve got accessed to the internet. My daughter lives in Saga city and my son in Fukuoka told me they were OK via LINE.
Fortunately the electric power came back in a short time.
I found the pump in the aquarium had stopped. The water level was low lately. It was good, thanks for that, not so much water had splashed out.
Until dawn I couldn’t go back to the bed. I went out to draw water from a rainwater storage tank.
After a while, my son found the cupboard door was locked. Though I had forgotten, I put a tool which came down to prevent the glass door open.
The earthquake reminded me I am mortal. There’s not big difference between my fish and me. Deaths are inevitable.
So I wish all of creatures live long.

On 16th Saturday and 17th Sunday I didn’t go out.
On Monday I went to work and on the way back home I dropped in a supermarket. I wanted to buy some bread. But there was no bread. I went to another supermarket, I found no bread no pastry.
I wondered the logistics was out of order or someone bought so much and took those to somewhere people were suffering.
On the next day I asked my son to buy some bread at a bakery. He could get.

During last week, I felt aftershock, I chatted with my colleges about the damage in Kumamoto or Yufuin. On Monday, just before I left workplace I met a man who had graduated Hita high school two years ago.He is a Kumamoto University student. He asked me donate a fund-raising for Kumamoto. I put a thousand yen bill. I hope the students who so to the universities in Kumamoto cities recover the damages.

I've read books

In the  weekend I’ve read three books which I had borrowed at Tanso Library. The two of the books were belong to Tanso Library, and the one of them was belong to Oita prefectural library.

First I’ve read “the Book Lover’s Rebellion” volume 4 written by  Kasuki Miya. Next, “the Tokyo Zero Year” by Akagawa Jiro. And at last “Why Japan can’t decide to abandon the nuclear power plants?” by Komori Atsushi.

The Book Lover’s Rebellion is a nice young adult novel. A 5 years old girl whose inside is a 22 years old modern Japanese women is now lives in an another world.
She loves books, but in this world there is no paper, no publishing industry. Though she is a little child, she tries to make books, in the making process, she shows her knowledge as a 22 years modern woman, it has caught the attention from the upper class in this world. It is very exciting and instructive. I recommend this novel from eleven teens to adults.
The Tanso library has held volume 1 to 4. for now I expect it hold 5 and 6. But I can’t borrow the book so far. So I read the following on internet. The novel has appeared in the “Be a novelist” site at first. That’s why I read the following on the site. Later I want to read the books.

The Tokyo Zero Year is a crime novel at a society which is regulated the freedom of speech. It is cynical. I know some people are waiting this book at the library, i should return it as soon as possible.

The “Why Japan can’t decide to abandon the nuclear power plant?” is a  summarized book the newspaper articles about the complex of the electric companies and government and math media. It is well described in detail.

note #FLlearnenglish

#FLlearnenglish
Now I’m at the 6th week of Future Learning Exploring English. Such a good time I have not expected leaning English.
I should note the comments I’ve posted so as not to forget.

(Week 3)
Something about my countryside
I live in Kyushu island,Japan. My house stands in a small village. There is no restaurant,no shopping mall,no hospital. You may say it's inconvenient, yes, but I love the tranquility.
About two hour's drive takes me Aso volcano and meadow.
In spring I enjoy ume and cherry blossom. Before farmers plant young rice they fill water the paddies, the surface reflects blue sky, and frogs are noisy in the evening.
In autumn the leaves turn to red and yellow. The bell crickets sing at night. In winter, though I don't like coldness, the stars are brilliant in the night.
The climate is not gentle in summer and in winter. I complain about it. Anyway it makes me happy when spring and autumn come.

(Week 4)
My knowledge about Shakespeare
I don't know much about Shakespeare's play. In my favorite novel & movie "Dead Poets Society", a boy played Puck in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". It was very impressive.
O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
I know just he wrote many excellent plays for his own theatrical company.

About some characters from literature who have challenged ideas about women’s roles in society
These novels come to my mind: Color Purple,Their Eyes were Watching Gods, Push,My Antonia, Room, Catsle in the Air, and The Only Neat Things to Do.
Some good female poets have had an impact, for example, Akiko Yosano, Noriko Ibaragi, Rin Ishigaki, Machi Tawara. I think many women have been encouraged by their works.

About ‘anniversary’ events
I think the anniversary events are kind of helpful to inform people about the author.
My favorite author Roald Dahl was born in 1916. I expect his new biography or anecdote will be in public.

About Japanese books which I recommend
The writer i think best describes my country or culture? Hmm, do I recommend someone from modern writers, not Tale of Genji, or Lafcadio Hearn?
Does anyone have read Otsuichi? He has many fan in young generation. He writes roughly two type of novels. One is so scary, dreadful, and the other is so heartwarming. His novels are translated in English, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Thai and Korean. Please look for any copy at your regional library.
If you are a Sci-Fi fan, you may like Project Itoh. I recommend "Harmony". I was surprised at the beginning of the novel, the description of 'etml', it looked like html. The three girls struggle to survive it the super harmonized society. You can read it in English.
If you are a mystery fan, you may like Miyuki Miyabe. She has written many books for juvenile and for adult. "All She was Worth" is the book I have read her novel at the first time. I was so touched by the degree of completion. It is translated in English.

(Week 5)
The environment and me
I drive to my work place. Because there is no public transportation. So I bought a energy efficient small car, and drive as steady as possible. I set solar panel on my roof about 17 years ago, though it was not inexpensive at that time.I want to prevent the global warming.
Almost all people have heard about global warming. The appliances, cars, and houses are sold with advertisements which emphasize those energy efficiency.

Why I think taking care of environment is important
I’m going to talk why I think taking care of the environment is important. I live in Japan. After World War Ⅱ it has become an industrial country. While the progress the nature resources have been consumed mindlessly. It cause some pollution, increase of CO2 emission, and damage to eco-system.

While the process, not many citizen was aware of the irremediable error.
Now various reports has brought to citizen so that we shouldn’t pretend we don’t know. If the environment will be changed, it won’t be suitable all the creatures including human beings any more.

It is possible making a decent legislation to prevent the environment.Only if people agree to that.

The sooner, the better. Because the environment need to be well balanced,  after having been destroyed it will be difficult to recreate.

About environmental problems
There are some issues about environment in Japan, especially the nuclear power plants.
There are old nuclear power plants too dangerous to run continuously. Most nuclear power plants are stands above active faults. After Fukushima Daiichi power plant's accidents all the nuclear power plants had stopped running for a while. But the government still keen to restart those for the sake of electric power cooperations.
It really scares people not only the possibility of another accident but also everyday leak of radioactive materials or the nuclear wastes. And I'm afraid the waste of money for the plan of reprocessing plant.
I hope in near future people vote to quitting nuclear power plants.

(Week 6)
About the role of the entrepreneur in my country
In Japan there are not enough offices which takes care of old people and babies and toddlers. On the other hand there are some evil offices which traps the poor and old in miserable stable to rob their social security subsidy. So some people have started business as NPOs to save the suffering people.
I don't know the detail, but there are changes both for better and for worse in the welfare field.
I've never seen the TV program for the entrepreneurs in Japan. I think people aren't used to entrepreneurship.

My advise to the entrepreneur in Japan
He said an entrepreneur is who sees a gap in the market, he meant there would be a business chance. I think he is right everywhere in the world.
I have no idea whether the people with the right qualities will succeed anywhere or not. People who have succeeded might have had right qualities, but people who have not succeeded might have had right qualities. It depends.
In my country I recommend them to look out the needs of double-income parents. While their children are under 10 years old they need somebody who takes care of their children when the kids are sick or when the parents go to business trip.
I suppose it will be nice if there is a matching system who needs nanny and who can take care of kids.

<3週目>

<4週目>

I enjoy EXPLORING ENGLISH in the "FutureLearn"

I have not written my journal nearly one month.
There are some reason. First I applied the FutureLearn  EXPLORING ENGLISH course on late Februaly.
It was so interesting and enjoyable. In the first week I’ve learned about global language. in second week I’ve learned British music. And from a learner’s comment I’ve known a TV show, the Voice UK.
It was awesome, and I couldn’t resist bing watching every day. In the third week I’ve learned about British perspective. Then learners communicate the countryside and climate their country.
I’ve posted this,
“I live in Kyushu island, Japan. My house stands in a small village. There is no restaurant, no shopping mall, no hospital. You may say it’s inconvenient, yes, but I love the tranquility. About two hour’s drive takes me Aso volcano and meadow.
In spring I enjoy ume and cherry blossom. Before farmers plant young rice they fill water the paddies, the surface reflects blue sky, and frogs are noisy in the evening.
In autumn the leaves turn red and yellow. The bell crickets sing at night. In winter, though I don’t like coldness, the stars are brilliant in the night.
The climate is not gentle in summer and in winter. I complain about it. Anyway it makes me happy when spring and autumn come.”
To my surprise,26 people have liked it.
But at fourth week it is a little bit difficult,as the theme is British literature including Shakespeare.
I have read some juvenile literature in English. I love Michelle Magorian. And I recommend Thread trilogy written by Sophia Bennett.
I don't know much about Shakespeare's play. In my favorite novel & movie "Dead Poets Society", a boy played Puck in "A Midsummer Night's Dream". It was very impressive.
The EXPLORING ENGLISH course is keep on. I must learn more about Shakespeare, and In fifth and sixth week I don’t know what I’m going to learn.
This course is very instructive, also it is stimulus to see about 200 comments to each theme from all around the world.
That’s one reason I have not written journal. Another reason is my iMac would not boot a week ago. After I turned on the power, it started to boot, but in the middle of booting it died. It occurred once last September. At that time I had it repaired. But this time I gave up. I’ve got a new Mac Book Pro the day before yesterday.
One more reason, last Sunday I took part in Ume festival as a rice ball stall salesperson. It had worked in Saturday night and Sunday. I chatted another salesperson about comics. So the woman rented me the “Glass Mask” vol.42 to vol.49. I had completely good time.
For I appreciate her, I lent her my favorite comic “Balzer in military boots”.
I have skipped writing English long time.I should write my journal regularly from now on.
