Oyster Factory

On 23 Sat. I went to Fukuoka city for two reasons. First, I intended to go to movie, second, to to a meeting.

  I went to KBC cinema1-2 to see the “Oyster Factory” and to listen to the director’s talk. It is a documentaly film. Mr. Kazuhiro Soda filmed it at Ushimado in Okayama prefecture.
 
　In this district there are some oyster factories. Recently the number of workers who shuck oysters are decreasing. Since the Japanese workers are getting older and young Japanese never come to work, young Chinese are working now.
 In this movie, there are some Chinese workers in Ushimado, and one day, new Chinese workers come to Mr.Watanabe’s oyster factory.
 Mr. Watanabe used to be a fisherman in Minamisanriku, after the 3/11 disaster he evacuated with his wife and young children. Thanks to some relationship, he has moved to Ushimado and is running an oyster factory
 There used to be more factories, but now the number of those are decreasing, because the successor is reducing. Maybe this is a lucky case.
 An old fisherman who is not in good health condition, fortunately his son willing to succeed his business, but he can’t hand over his business to his son yet, because it is two and half years to be age 65. If he handed over under 65, his son must pay a gift tax.It’s large amount for his son. That’s why he’s still working feeling tough.

 The Chinese men who have newly come look so earnest. But in the previous scene, some Japanese men were talking about a Chinese man who had back home only after five days. And they were talking about the culture gap between Japanese and Chinese.

 After seeing the movie, there was a talk show.
 The director Mr. Soda talked about how to getting closer to the people who he filmed. In this case his spouse’ grannie used to live in the town.And She knew some of the fishermen. It helped.
  A woman asked him when the movie screened in foreign countries how did he display subtitles the movie. He replied he placed subtitles translate  Japanese but Chinese. Because almost all audience see this movie feel wonder what those Chinese talk. It is important.
　Actually he had no idea what they spoke at that time, later he asked his Taiwanese friend what they spoke. But the Taiwanese couldn’t understand then he asked a mainland Chinese, but he couldn’t understand only said the conversation sounded Shandong dialect and asked a man from Shandong,
 The man couldn’t understand but guessed it was the neighboring village, after that he has understood what they said.
   It was noting but you would get seasick when you on board a ship or something.
  You are wonder if people are talking in foreign language you can’t understand. To let the audience feel that he didn’t place subtitle for the Chinese conversation.
   He said Mr. Hirokawa Tyuich would come to here with screening “Human Battlefield” near future, with he director Mr. Hasegawa Saburo.

  I’m so glad. It was the first time to go to KBC Cinema 1-2. I knew that the David Bowie’s film was screening on 6 Feb.

   After that I walked to Daimyo to a drinking party.
   I visited “Black Sheep”, a brutish pub. They have many king of beers.
  I didn’t taste any alcohol this time. I’d like to go there by train or bus next time.
  I left there at 10 o’clock, and came back home through the express way.
 It was snowing and I was made to stop at Hagino SA to be checked the tires. The man who dealt with gave me a card telling studless and said if I would be stopped again, show it.
 Fortunately I could come home before it snowed hard.

  23日　土曜日、２つ用事があって福岡市に行った。一つは映画、もう一つはパーティ。
　KBCシネマ１・２に『牡蠣工場』上映と監督のトークを見に行った。想田和弘監督が岡山県牛窓で撮ったドキュメンタリーだ。
　その地区にはいくつかの牡蠣工場がある。最近は殻をむく仕事をする人の数が減っている。日本人のむき子さんが高齢化して若い人はこの仕事に就かないので、いまは若い中国人が働いている。
　この映画では何人か牛窓で働いている中国人が出てくる。ある日わたなべさんの牡蠣工場に新しく中国人がやってくる。
　わたなべさんは南三陸で牡蠣の仕事をしていたが、３・１１の地震のあと妻と幼い子どもを連れて避難した。いくつかのつながりがあって内窓に引っ越してきて牡蠣工場を経営している。
　前はもっとたくさん工場があったが、後継者が減っているので工場の数も減っている。おそらく次はラッキーな例だろう。老いた人が健康状態は良くないというが、この人の息子が仕事を継ぐといっている。でもまだ息子に経営を譲ることはできない。６５歳になるまであと２年半あるから。もし、６５歳になる前に譲ると贈与税がかかってしまう。それは息子にとって負担が大きい。だから、きついといいながらまだ仕事をしている。
 新しく来た中国人はまじめそうだ。しかし、その前のシーンで日本人の男たちが話していた中国人はたった５日仕事しただけで国に帰ってしまったという。日本人と中国人の風俗習慣の違いについても話していた。

　上映のあと監督のトークがあった。
　想田監督は映画に撮る人たちとどう親しくなるか話した。この映画の場合は彼の妻のおばあちゃんがここに住んでいて、何人か漁師さんも知り合いだった。それでうまく行った。
　ある女性客が、海外で上映したときは字幕はどうしたのか質問した。監督は日本語は翻訳したけど中国語はしなかったと言った。なぜならこの映画を見る人のほとんどは中国人たちが何を話しているんだろう、と思うから。
　実際、監督自身、そのときは彼らが何と言っているのかわからなかった。あとで、台湾人の友人に何と言っているのか聞いた。でもその台湾人はわからなかった。それで中国人の友人に聞いた、でも山東省らしいというだけでわからなかった。それで山東省出身の人に聞いた。
 その人もわからなくて、でも隣の村だろうということはわかった。その後やっとなんと言っているかわかった。たいしたことは言っていなかった、船に乗ると船酔いするよ、とかそんなこと。
　外国人同士が話していると、なんて言っているんだろうと思う。観客にそれを感じてもらうために中国語の会話には字幕をつけなかった。
　広川隆一さんが『人間の戦場』の上映会にここに来られると話していた。監督の長谷川三郎さんといっしょに。
　とてもうれしかった。KBCシネマ１・２に来たのは初めてだった。２月６日にデイヴィッド。ボウイの映画があることもわかった。

　その後、大名まで歩いて行った。集まりがあるので。
「ブラックシープ」というブリチッシュパブに行った。ビールがたくさん種類があった。
　今回はアルコールは試せなかったので、次に来るときは電車かバスで来ようと思った。
　１０時にそこを出た。そして高速道路で帰った。
雪がふって萩野サービスエリアで止められてタイヤの点検をされた。かかりの人がスタッドレスタイヤだと書いてあるカードをくれて、次に止めたれたらこれを見せるとよいと言われた。
　幸い、雪が激しくなる前にうちに帰った。
