The Whale Rider

On 2 March, I've watched a movie,"The Whale Rider" at Hita city hall.
A girl named Paikea --called Pai-- was born in a Maori village in New Zealand. Her twin brother died with their mother in birth. She did not.
But Pai's grandpa had been waiting for a boy. Their ancestor was Paikea, a man who had come with riding a whale from Hawaiiki to New Zealand. Pai's granpa believed some day Paikea would appear and lead them again.
He taught the boys in the village traditional song, dance, and martial art. But he refused to teach Pai. A woman leader was thought impossible.His wife and sons were treating him coldly.
Still Pai liked her grandpa. Her grandpa threw his valuable whale tooth in the sea and let the boys to take it back to examine who is the new leader. No boy had succeeded.
Pai felt sorry her grandpa depressed, then dived into the sea and get it back.Her grandma saved it.
She made a speech at a school concert, like this, inspite of not appearing a leader whom her grandpa waited, she wanted to get along together with all villagers.
One night several whales were stranded. All the villagers tried to save them, and failed. After people left the beach, Pai claimed one of the whale, then tapped himand whispered "come on". The whale gone toward the sea with a girl riding his back. The villagers, including Pai's grandpa, were very surprised. Pai's grandpa noticed that true love had passed him by. He was regret so hard. After a while Pai was found and was taken in a hospital.
It was worth praying of all villagers, Pai has awaken.
In the last scene the conflict between Pai's grandpa and his family was overcome. The villagers are paddling the canoe with united efforts, with singing a traditional song. On the front seat, Pai and her grandpa are singing happily.
I was moved. I've got a strong message from this movie. I's the revival of a culture or human relationship.
This screening was held by a Hita city cordinator for international relations and an assistant language teacher. If this event is to continue,I'll come next time.

３月２日　「クジラの島の少女」という映画を日田市文化センターで見ました。
パイケアという少女、パイと呼ばれます、がニュージーランドのマオリの村に生まれました。双子の弟は出産のとき母親と一緒に死んでしまいました。彼女は死にませんでした。
　しかし、祖父は　男の子を待ち望んでいました。彼らの祖先はクジラに乗ってハワイーキからニュージーランドにやってきたパイケアという男でした。祖父は再びパイケアが現れて彼らを導いてくれると信じていました。
祖父は村の男の子たちに伝統の歌・踊り・武術を教えましたがパイには教えませんでした。女がリーダーになることはありえないと思われていました。彼の妻と息子たちは彼を冷ややかに見つめました。
　それでもパイは祖父を慕いました。祖父は後継者を選ぶため大切なクジラの歯を海に投げ入れ少年たちにとってこさせようとしましたが、誰もとってこれませんでした。
　祖父が元気をなくしているのを見てパイが海にもぐり取り戻してきました。それを祖母がしまっておきました。
　パイは学校の発表会でスピーチをしました。こういうものです。祖父の望むリーダーが現れなくても村の皆で力をあわせてやっていきたいです、と。
　ある晩クジラが浜にうちあげられて皆で救おうとしますが失敗します。人々が浜を去ったあと、パイはクジラに登りやさしくたたいてささやきました、「行こう」と。パイを背中にのせたクジラが海に戻っていくのを見て人々は祖父も含めて驚きました。本当の愛が過ぎ去っていったことに気づいた祖父は激しく後悔しました。しばらくしてパイは発見され病院に収容されました。
　村人みんなの祈りが通じてパイは目覚めました。
　最後の場面、祖父と家族は和解しました。村人は力を合わせ伝統の歌を歌いながらカヌーを漕ぎ出します。先頭で祖父とパイがにこにこして歌っています。
　それは感動的でした。文化とか人間関係の再生という力強いメッセージを受け取りました。
　この上映会は日田市の国際交流員とALTの協力で行われました。次回もあるならまた来たいです。
